Breast Imaging Tomosynthesis at The Princess Margaret
February 14, 2013

Tomosynthesis MachinePrincess Margaret Cancer Centre is one of the first hospitals in Ontario to offer patients 3-Dimensional breast mammography scans, called "tomosynthesis".

Acquired in the same way as regular mammograms, this technology creates sliced, computerized images of the breast, allowing Radiologists to have more detailed information for evaluation, especially with dense breast tissues.

The Princess Margaret recently acquired three Hologic Selenia Dimensions units, the first commercially available tool to provide breast tomosynthesis.

While research is underway to determine its value and limitations, this promising technology offers an additional, highly sensitive tool for breast cancer detection.
