Remembering John MacNaughton

 A Good Friend Passes
Paul Aofs, President & CEO of The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation remembers John MacNaughton.

When you work in a cancer centre, you need to be prepared for saying goodbye to friends that you have come to know. It’s not easy, and it never gets easier.
Last Friday, February 15th, I heard of the passing of John MacNaughton. John was a former neighbor, a former Board Chair of The Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation, and a great Canadian.
John was hugely influential in my joining the Foundation back in the summer of 2003. In fact, a three-hour conversation one Sunday morning in my backyard over coffee is when I really got interested in taking on the CEO role at PMCF.
John was Board Chair of the Foundation, and a patient at The Princess Margaret as well. In his usual way, he gave me all of the necessary background in a thoughtful and organized way. He didn’t push me and he gave me the “warts and all” story of working at a cancer centre. I learned so much from him that morning and I’m grateful after nine years for that important and transformational conversation.
John was a great family man and influenced and helped so many people over the years. He is my definition of a great Canadian – strong, community-minded, modest, accomplished, thoughtful, and in every way, a leader. John MacNaughton got things done and helped everyone who was fortunate enough to come into his large network. John was the kind of leader we need more of.
So long to a great Canadian and a great friend.
