THE TORONTO WEEKEND TO END WOMEN’S CANCERS BECOMES THE SHOPPERS DRUG MART ONEWALK TO CONQUER CANCER
September 7, 2014

The Shoppers Drug Mart Weekend to End Women’s Cancers announced a historic transition of North America’s largest multi-day walk for women’s cancers in to the Shoppers Drug Mart OneWalk To Conquer Cancer in 2015.   The next generation fundraiser will consist of 25 km walk through picturesque streets and communities of Toronto and an inspiring festival experience in one day to raise vital funds for Personalized Cancer Medicine at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre.

“We are re-launching The Walk with a brand new name and broader appeal so each Walker can raise funds for the cancer type they care about the most,” said Paul Alofs, President & CEO of The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation.

“When a participant registers for OneWalk, they select a cancer fund the dollars they raise will support.  Princess Margaret Cancer Centre will use the funds raised to lead the revolution in Personalized Cancer Medicine, allowing our world-leading doctors and scientists to detect cancers earlier, diagnose with more precision, target treatment for each patient and support patients and their families throughout the cancer journey,” Alofs added.

This year, over 97,000 men and over 93,000 women will be diagnosed with cancer in Canada and over 76,600 people will die from the disease.  OneWalk To Conquer Cancer will bring together communities of women and men, cancer survivors, donors and all their supporters around a common goal, to conquer all forms of cancer.  Registered walkers will select from the following cancer funds at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre:  Discovery Research Fund; Breast; Gynecology (Uterine, Cervical & Ovarian); Lung, Colon, Rectal and Gastrointestinal, Endocrine; Prostate, Testicular, Bladder  and Genitourinary; Head and Neck; Brain, Central Nervous System, Eye; Leukemia, Lymphoma, Endocrine; Sarcoma; Skin Cancer, Melanoma; Childhood Cancers.

"I walked in the 2014 Weekend to End Women's Cancers to honour my father, an 84-year-old colon cancer survivor, because I wanted to give back to Princess Margaret Cancer Centre," said Maralee Noltie, a first-year walker from Chatham, ON.

"Now that the annual event is continuing as the Shoppers Drug Mart OneWalk To Conquer Cancer, I will continue to support Princess Margaret by raising funds for women’s cancers and will hope the men in my family will join and raise money for cancers they care about as well like colon, prostate or testicular cancer.  I am happy my father and I have our health, yet I will walk 25 km in 2015 for the cancer patients and families who are still being impacted by this disease,” Noltie added.

Alofs said funds raised through the Shoppers Drug Mart OneWalk To Conquer Cancer will continue to help end women’s cancers such as breast or gynecologic cancers as well as many other forms of cancer.

“We’re extremely grateful and inspired by our Toronto Weekend Walker community, whose passion and commitment made the event a remarkable success for our cancer program over the last 12 years,” said Alofs.

“We will continue walking.  The funds raised through OneWalk To Conquer Cancer will continue supporting clinical enhancements, survivorship programs and research of Dr. Tak Mak and his teams at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, in addition to enabling those who’ve been impacted by other cancers to raise funds and support our other world-leading doctors and researchers at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre,” Alofs added.

The first annual Shoppers Drug Mart OneWalk To Conquer Cancer will take place on Saturday September 12th of next year in Toronto.
